Michelle Musso of Smithtown, a mother to a now 23-year-old daughter with special needs, created the Smithtown Challengers out of a deep personal understanding of the challenges and gaps families face when it comes to meaningful social engagement for their loved ones. What started 13 years ago as a small bowling league has since blossomed into a thriving community where friendships are made, confidence is built, and laughter is shared. Michelle's passion is visible in every detail, from the way she warmly greets families at events to the careful planning of each themed night. For her, it's personal—and it's purposeful.
"For most of these young adults, this is their only chance to socialize. It gives them something to look forward to. And when I see their faces light up, when I hear them say, 'See you Friday at Friendly's!'—that's everything to me."
Parents also benefit so much from this. They learn from one another—how to navigate complicated systems, how to access services, how to advocate. It becomes a community of support for everyone involved.

At Smithtown Challengers, we believe in the power of compassionate support and understanding. Our mission goes beyond organizing events—we create spaces where individuals with diverse abilities can feel truly seen, valued, and empowered. Every interaction, every shared moment is an opportunity to build confidence, foster connections, and celebrate the unique strengths of each individual.
"The Smithtown Challengers has given my daughter the opportunity to engage with the community and given me a community to look to whenever I have questions. She is one of the younger members (8), but we hope to see more people of all ages to join this amazing group of people.
It's difficult to find inclusive activities for my daughter, and we are now consistent attendants to weekly bowling and the various social gatherings offered throughout the year."
"The Smithtown Challengers group has been an amazing opportunity for my sister in law to make beautiful friendships, get out into the community, engage with her peers and remain physically, mentally and socially active. Michelle and her team of parent volunteers are kind, welcoming and so fun and creative. Our family is so grateful for this group as it has enhanced not only my sister in laws quality of life, but also giving our family the opportunity to connect with other like-minded parents and caregivers of the amazing young adults who belong to the Smithtown Challengers family. Thank you for creating an uplifting, accepting, and loving environment for us all, and giving us the priceless gift of a second family with you all.
Michelle and the Smithtown Challengers Group as a whole have brought so much joy to my nieces life. She looks forward to the weekly bowling sessions with her friends as well as the Socials. You all truly go above and beyond and we are so thankful. Highly recommend.
