Our Founder: Michelle Musso

Founded by Michelle Musso of Smithtown, a mother to a now 23-year-old daughter with special needs, Smithtown Challengers was created out of a deep personal understanding of the challenges and gaps families face when it comes to meaningful social engagement for their loved ones. What started 13 years ago as a small bowling league has since blossomed into a thriving community where friendships are made, confidence is built, and laughter is shared. Michelle's passion is visible in every detail, from the way she warmly greets families at events to the careful planning of each themed night. For her, it's personal—and it's purposeful.

"For most of these young adults, this is their only chance to socialize. It gives them something to look forward to. And when I see their faces light up, when I hear them say, 'See you Friday at Friendly's!'—that's everything to me."

Parents also benefit so much from this. They learn from one another—how to navigate complicated systems, how to access services, how to advocate. It becomes a community of support for everyone involved. Our mission is to cultivate a welcoming and inclusive community for individuals with all abilities and their families. Through thoughtfully designed social opportunities and active parent involvement, we strive to create a supportive environment where individuals can develop meaningful connections, build confidence, and thrive. We are dedicated to fostering a sense of belonging for both individuals and their families, offering encouragement, shared understanding, and lasting support. We encourage individuals with all abilities to join Smithtown Challengers for the friendships, fun, and sense of belonging our group provides.

We also encourage families and supporters to help us grow by spreading the word. Supporting us doesn't just mean attending events—it means sharing our mission and letting as many people as possible know that a caring, inclusive community like this exists. The more people who know about Smithtown Challengers, the more lives we can touch and the stronger our network becomes. Experience a nurturing environment designed specifically for families with special needs, where children can thrive and parents can connect.
